A lifelong musician and picker for more than 40 years, Lowell National Historical Park Ranger Alex Demas began Lowell's now famous Banjo and Fiddle Contests in 1980 and continues to host the event to this day. A multiple winner of banjo and fiddle events across the country, such as the Craftsbury, VT and Fiddler's Grove, NC, Alex wanted to start an event with all the good parts of the other ones, but none of the drawbacks. Among the things which set Lowell's event apart are:
Free entry for contestants and public
Free workshops for musicians
8 different banjo and fiddle categories, including the unique Ethnic Fiddle and Banjo-Other Styles
Judging done by expert players
Rules are clearly stated
Accompanist provided if desired
In its 33rd year, the reputation of this great event is still growing, including a half a dozen spin-off events across the country.
