Over 75 contestants compete for prizes in such categories as Bluegrass, Dixieland, Old Time and Mountain fiddling and Ethnic Dance tunes from countries all over the world. This event is free of charge (donations are welcome) and is a full day of music, food and family fun. Dulcimer, Oldtime Banjo, Bluegrass Banjo, Oldtime Fiddle, Twin Fiddle and Banjo-Other Styles workshops begin at 10AM and the Contests begin at Noon and continue through the afternoon till 6PM.

A lifelong musician and picker for more than 40 years, Lowell National Historical Park Ranger Alex Demas began Lowell's now famous Banjo and Fiddle Contests in 1980 and continues to host the event to this day. A multiple winner of banjo and fiddle events across the country, such as the Craftsbury, VT and Fiddler's Grove, NC, Alex wanted to start an event with all the good parts of the other ones, but none of the drawbacks. Among the things which set Lowell's event apart are:

In its 33rd year, the reputation of this great event is still growing, including a half a dozen spin-off events across the country.
