Kleine Kammermusik - The Art of Counterpoint: From Bach to Zelenka Home Page

Salem Athenaeum
337 Essex St
Salem, Mass.    Venue Information

Saturday October 21, 2017 8:00 PM

Kleine Kammermusik, based in Philadelphia, was formed in 2013 as a flexible ensemble of two treble winds (oboes or recorders) with a mixed continuo group led by acclaimed harpsichordist Leon Schelhase. They explore music suited to diverse occasions, from outdoor celebrations to intimate chamber gatherings. As virtuoso players, the members of Kleine Kammermusik have developed an intuitive approach to ensemble playing, and their musical rapport produces performances of superb artistic control and unmistakable elegance. Their first CD, just out, has been warmly welcomed, and their "graceful and engaging" playing has been justly praised.

Kleine Kammermusik will present great contrapuntal works of J. S. Bach, from The Musical Offering, Art of Fugue, Well-Tempered Clavier, and other collections. Next to these classics will be seldom-heard, intriguing sonatas by Bach's Czech friend J. D. Zelenka (1679-1745). Born near Prague, Zelenka was a violone player in the glittering cultural center of Dresden. His music is "notably adventurous," with superb counterpoint and inventive, "iridescent" harmonies. A poet found his church music "so touching that the rapt breast / Has a foretaste of the heavenly pleasures."
