ANNE AZEMA (voice & harp, hurdy gurdy) and SHIRA KAMMEN (vielle, harp), in LEALE AMIE: Woman's Voice in Medieval Song (1200-1300) Home Page

First Religious Society
27 School Street
Carlisle, MA

Thursday March 28, 2019 8:00 PM

Anne Azema (voice and hurdy-gurdy) and Shira Kammen (vielle and harp), present "Leale Amie," an exploration of the spirit and power of women through songs and poems of medieval France. They evoke archetypal symbols of the feminine as well as images of women amid the flow of their lives and loves. Passion, joy, sorrow, and humor inform these treasures - eight centuries old, yet timeless. Aristocratic pieces, including trouvere songs by Count Thibaut de Champagne (1201-53), rub shoulders with others of a popular nature, creating an intimate yet emotionally moving experience.

This program was performed last summer in Count Thibaut's own residence in Reims, where the press saluted it in glowing terms:

"Rich and varied...light and filled with joy and hope...a vielle full of energy...a clear and pearly voice...Bravo and thanks!"

Anne Azema and Shira Kammen have recorded prolifically and toured widely. They devote their insight and fantasy to the magnificent repertoires of medieval France, Provence, England and Spain. French-born Azema, artistic director of the Boston Camerata, is possessed of a crystalline voice and a gift for theatre, while Kammen is a virtuoso with flair and humor. They most recently taught together at Boston University and were in residence with the Boston Camerata at MIT.
