Haydn: String Quartet in G Minor, Opus 20 #3

Mendelssohn: String Quartet in E-flat Major, Opus 12

The six groundbreaking Opus 20 quartets earned Franz Joseph Haydn the title of "The Father of the String Quartet." While string quartets had existed before this time, they generally consisted of a solo violinist with simple background accompaniment. By giving the cellist and violist more to do, the harmonies became richer and the interplay between instruments suddenly made string quartets more fun to hear and play. Opus 20 directly inspired both Mozart & Beethoven to write their own quartets. In turn, Beethoven's Opus 74 string quartet, "The Harp," inspired Felix Mendelssohn's Opus 12 String Quartet.
