Bonnie Anderson, piano, and Shay Rudolph, cello

Beethoven: Sonata No. 3 in A Major

Chopin: Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 65

Westford native and Piano Heritage Series Artistic Director Bonnie Anderson will collaborate with Chelmsford resident Shay Rudolph for a concert celebrating the magnificent sonorities of piano and cello. Ludwig van Beethoven's A Major Cello Sonata was written at the same time as his famous Fifth Symphony. Although this piece is full of spontaneity, light, and beauty, early editions included Beethoven's inscription, "Between Tears and Sorrow," which imparts a bittersweet quality. This glorious sonata is the first to treat the cello as much more than just accompaniment. Frederic Chopin's Cello Sonata was one of only nine works written for instruments other than the piano. A novice at writing for the cello, Chopin abandoned many versions of this sonata before settling on this one. This music was more mature than his previous compositions and was ahead of its time. The work was said by many to be "un-Chopin-like" and polarized his fans accordingly.
