Dünya is an early music group that imaginatively traces the varied musical currents that swirled around Istanbul in the 16th to 18th centuries. European musicians and styles flowed into the great Ottoman capital, while Eastern music of different sorts was carried into Europe.

The complex musical interactions are portrayed in a program drawn from a wide array of materials: excerpts from European travelers' accounts; the unique 17th-century manuscript of a sultan's music director, who was a Polish convert to Islam; popular, courtly and religious music from both sides; and Ottoman music transcribed by European observers. The six performers sing and play numerous, remarkable instruments, some of them lovingly reconstructed from early miniature paintings that evoke a lost world.
